1/26/24 Blog: Columnist David Strom, and A Free for All Friday!

YOU SHOULD READ DAVID STROM'S COLUMN ON HOTAIR.COM He is a great writer, always covers a wide variety of stuff and I've got him today at 1pm for a chat. Find his latest column on the shifting winds around the border here.

YOU'VE GOT TO WATCH TED CRUZ ON THE BORDER I am not a huge Ted Cruz fan but HOLY COW does he nail the border situation here. This speech should be spread far and wide. It's in David's column above but it's so good I want to make sure you see it. Worth every minute of your time.

IT'S A FREE FOR ALL FRIDAY So you get to dictate what we talk about so don't blow it.

RYAN SCHUILING IS LIVING THE LION FAN DREAM My frequent fill in host is a die hard Lion fan and he's coming in at 2:30 to talk about this weekend's Championship game.

NO, YOUR TODDLER DOESN'T BELONG AT A CITY COUNCIL MEETING Have you ever heard a rule so dumb you thought to yourself "what a dumb rule"? Well the reason behind such rules is because someone did that dumb thing in the first place. The Aurora City Council has passed a rule banning children from the dias because one city councilmember kept bringing her toddler to meetings and allowing him to disrupt the proceedings. Of course that member Alison Coombs is now claiming victimhood on behalf of other inconsiderate people who may want to bring their tiny humans to work, but this is ridiculous. And the notion that a breastfeeding mother won't be able to serve because of this rule is absurd. Read it here but now you now why that dumb rule exists.

A LIQUOR STORE NEAR A HOMELESS HOTEL KEEPS GETTING BROKEN INTO And before the homeless hotel opened this NEVER happened but now it's happening with regularity but I'm SURE there is NO connection. I'm SURE.

OMG THIS CARJACKING STORY A four month old baby was safely rescued after being left in the middle of a street in it's car seat after a carjacking. This kind of stuff is horrifying and I'd like to know the details of the carjacking too. We now live in a place where carjackers just dump babies after stealing cars. Yay. This is a story about the two women who found the baby.

SOMEONE STOLE A BOY SCOUT TRAILER FROM A CHURCH Because of course you steal from a church parking lot. We live among scumbags as these scouts just found out.

YOU LANE JUMPERS ARE MAKING CDOT RICH Since CDOT started enforcing the rules about lane jumping in and out of the express lanes they've brought in over $4 MILLION bucks. Read more here but the toll is always cheaper than the fine.

KRISTA KAFER ASKS FOR A PUBLIC SCHOOL TRUCE Which I am all for but I'm not the one trying to shove a bunch of progressive ideology down kid's throats so am I really the problem here? Read her column here but until the social justice warriors stop parents can't agree to any sort of truce.

THE RNC COPIES THE DNC There is a move to declare Trump the presumptive nominee by the Republican National Committee even though Nikki Haley is still very much in the race. This doesn't surprise me. A Trump ally from Maryland is behind the move because if there's anything Trump supporters hate it's a fair and open process. Let it play out, she will be done by the middle of February anyway if things go as they have. I used to think Republicans loved the rule of law but I guess that doesn't matter much anymore.

THE ELECTRIC VEHICLE FAD IS FADING And this is going to be a harsh reality for people like our Governor who is trying to force auto dealers to sell 80% electric by 2032. Charging anxiety, made worse by broken public chargers, lack of desire to retrofit a garage to handle charging and inflated up front costs have sucked the air out of the EV market. Now car manufacturers, including Tesla, are slashing prices on new cars just to get them gone. So what does this mean going forward when the government is so highly invested in EVs but the consumers aren't?

THE HELIUM SHORTAGE IS ABOUT MORE THAN BALLOONS I knew that there was an issue with helium supplies but I had no clue why it was such a big deal. Sure balloons are cool, but we can live without them, right? But MRI machines can't. Now the Federal government is getting ready to sell the Federal Helium Reserves and a trade organization is worried that could lead to an even tighter supply than we already have. This is super interesting.

LET'S SEE IF CHINA CAN REIN IN THEIR ALLY IRAN Because they are now asking Iran to rein in the Houthis to stop attacks in the Red Sea. According to Iranian diplomats the Chinese have warned Iran that if attacks on the extremely important shipping route didn't stop, it would have a negative impact on trade relations between China and Iran. What that means exactly isn't clear, but China uses that route to move goods and now their ships are being forced to go around Africa adding lots of money to the cost of doing business.

MORE JOHN FETTERMAN HAS BEEN RED PILLED EVIDENCE I kind of love this guy and that confuses me.

COLORADO WEATHER MAN IS MOST STRESSFUL DAY EVER This made me laugh because it's so right.

TWO MINUTE DRILL!

FOUR COLORADO RESTAURANTS MAKE YELP'S MOST ROMANTIC LIST And you can find them here but you better get on it if you want to book for Valentine's Day!

SHOULD YOU FLUSH WITH THE LID OPEN OR CLOSED? I'm #teamclosed because a flush sends a lot germs flying into the air but now I know from this article that I'm really not doing much good by doing that. Keep your toilet super clean instead.

COLORADO HAS ONE OF THE RICHEST COUNTIES IN THE COUNTRY And it's not a mountain county, but right here in Douglas County. DougCo is #8 and the only one not right next to DC or in California. Think about that part about how three of the richest counties in the top ten are right outside DC. Just think about that.

MIKAELA SHIFFRIN JUST KEEPS WINNING And adding to her win total as the winningest skier in history. She's up to 95 now after women's World Cup event that saw her closest rival suffer a season ending injury. Sad for that skier but great news as Mikaela continues her streak.

WHY DO PEOPLE FAIL AT JOB INTERVIEWS? This is great information because I've been guilty of this in the past. You must provide specific examples when asked a question about past performance. You must be able to shine yourself up in a very specific manner. Read more here and be prepared!

A MAJOR CORNELL DONOR PULLED DONATIONS OVER DEI It's finally happening! Donors to big universities are flexing their financial muscles and demanding real change to the toxic system of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion programs. The latest is Cornell University, where a prominent and longtime donor is demanding the President step down and Cornell dismantle the DEI programs that are teaching racism and favored classes. Read his letter here, it's a barnburner.

ON DISEASE AND DIET This is a great interview you can listen to or read with science writer Gary Taubes about his new book Rethinking Diabetes. I highly recommend you listen to it or read it as he goes headfirst at the diabetes treatments and protocols that ignore one cold fact: diabetics are no longer able to properly process carbohydrates and the easiest way to manage diabetes is to avoid carbohydrates.

PEOPLE SHARE FAMILY SECRETS THEY DISCOVERED WHEN SOMEONE DIED And some of these are nuts but I am never surprised what people hide from their families anymore. Some of these are just things that married couples do that kids don't want to think about.

DO YOU HAVE A RESTING RICH FACE? This sort of made me laugh today but it just goes to show you how much we rely on gut instinct for these things. A study showed photos to people and asked them to make snap judgments. What they found is interesting:

In the study, scientists analysed the snap judgements people make about each other and found faces deemed 'rich' are also considered more trustworthy.
They have smiley mouths, chiselled features, raised brows, closely-spaced eyes and rosy cheeks - characteristics that also seem trustworthy, warm and competent.
Meanwhile, faces seen as 'poor' have lowered eyebrows, shorter chins, downturned mouths and darker, cooler skin tones - which makes them appear untrustworthy, cold and inept.

You can buy raised brows with botox, by the way.

JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE HAS A NEW SONG OUT And I don't like the video (I think it's boring) I do like the song. His new album drops March 15th.
